"President Trump will withdraw from the Paris climate agreement", writes the White House in a press release that does not provide any further details.
It will take a year for the US to leave the agreement after the country submits a formal notification to the UN framework that underlies the global climate negotiations.
The announcement means a serious blow to international cooperation to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Critics warn that it may encourage other major emitting countries such as China and India to reduce their own commitments.
This is the second time the US is leaving the agreement. During his first term 2017-2021, Trump decided that the US would withdraw, which also happened.
Trump's successor Joe Biden decided on his first day in the White House in 2021 to rejoin the Paris Agreement.
The global climate agreement was negotiated in December 2015 when France hosted the recurring global climate summit. The agreement, among other things, states that global warming should be limited to below two degrees compared to pre-industrial times and that global emissions should reach their highest level as soon as possible and then decrease.
