Donald Trump was indicted last spring on 34 counts of forging documents and violating accounting laws in connection with payments to a porn star.
In light of the summer's Supreme Court decision, which grants a president extended legal immunity, Trump's lawyers have requested that the verdict be overturned.
New York Judge Juan Merchan was to have announced his decision on Tuesday, but has chosen to postpone it until November 19.
This is in line with the Trump side's demands. They argue that the decision should first be postponed and then the case should be completely dismissed.
It was in May that Trump was found guilty on 34 counts in the state trial in New York. The trial concerned allegations that Trump had ordered payments to individuals, primarily porn actress Stormy Daniels, who threatened to reveal sensitive information about him during the 2016 presidential campaign – and then tried to conceal it in the accounting of his companies.
The sentence was originally scheduled to be announced on November 26, but it is now unclear whether that will happen.
