The announcement means that migrants from several designated countries must leave the USA within a couple of weeks. The withdrawal of the permit primarily affects citizens from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, and according to US authorities, it concerns 532,000 people.
The permit for migrants to be in the USA was issued by former President Joe Biden, who introduced a legal opportunity in October 2022 for migrants to enter the USA. The opportunity was later extended in a new decision in January 2023.
Biden stated as an explanation for the decision that it was "a safe and humane way" to improve the situation at the heavily strained border between the USA and Mexico, where many migrants were waiting to try to enter the USA.
President Donald Trump's government decision takes effect when the Department of Homeland Security publishes the announcement on Tuesday. After that, migrants have 30 days to leave the country.
