Trinidad and Tobago declares a state of emergency due to an increase in the number of violent murders committed by criminal groups.
Only in December, 61 murders were committed, and a total of 623 throughout the year. This is an increase compared to 2023, when 577 murders were committed. Fitzgerald Hinds, Minister for National Security, calls it "an epidemic".
The measure, which applies for two days, gives the police the opportunity to search and arrest people without an arrest warrant.
