Translator altered Snyder's book

The translator Margareta Eklöf added a passage in a newly published book by the historian Timothy Snyder. The section added a formulation about how the Nazis viewed the German people, which was not there from the beginning, something that SVT's Cultural News has reported on, without Snyder or his publisher being informed about the change.

Now the translator tells Svenska Dagbladet that the entire book "About Freedom" contains unclear passages and repetitions, something she calls "thought ludd".

There was a completely incomprehensible sentence, which simply couldn't be made sense of. So I added some explanatory words after consulting with the editor and the philosopher that the publisher had hired at my request.

Eklöf, born 1930, is well-reputed but demanded, due to the manuscript's poor quality, that Albert Bonniers publishing house allow her to do the translation under a pseudonym.

She says that the problem lies in that Snyder, who has been praised for previous books about, for example, Vladimir Putin's path to power, has been given such an elevated position that his American publisher didn't dare intervene when his reasoning became too unclear.

Åsa Ernflo, acting publishing manager at Albert Bonniers publishing house, writes to SvD:

"We take the allegations in Kulturnyheterna's segment seriously and will immediately review the material to ensure that the Swedish edition is in satisfactory condition."
