The local trade unions see a brighter economy ahead of 2025. But the picture is mixed.

Trade Unions Look Positively on the New Year

The Unionen union of civil servants has let its local clubs in Swedish companies assess the prospects for their own company. Overall, the outlook is brighter than for 2024.

"The economy has been weaker than expected during the autumn, but Unionen's clubs see signs of brighter times ahead", writes Unionen's chief economist Tobias Brännemo in a comment.

Four out of ten clubs think that the general mood for their own company looks better than in 2024. This is twice as many as those who believe the situation looks worse (two out of ten), while the rest see an unchanged situation.

Lower interest costs speak for a better situation for the company, while higher energy prices worry, according to the clubs' responses.

But the picture varies between industries. Trade and the IT industry are overall more optimistic, while union clubs within the automotive industry are significantly more pessimistic.

The need for labor with the right skills is estimated to be a continued problem for many companies, and even increase during 2025.

The survey was conducted on December 9-17. The panel includes 553 elected representatives from companies in the private sector. The response rate was 50 percent. The clubs that responded to the survey represent companies with 345,000 employees in Sweden.
