Among the dead are a Russian couple who were on vacation on the island. The police have not yet confirmed the identity of the others, but according to local media, most of the victims appear to be Thai and Myanmar migrant workers.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has no information about missing or deceased Swedes.

The landslide, which hit an area with hotels and apartments during the night, was caused by heavy rainfall.

Those who lived in the area were caught off guard, says police chief Khundech Na Nongkhai.

Thailand has been hit by heavy monsoon rains over the past week. The rainfall occurs annually, but is believed to have become increasingly intense due to climate change.
