The actors from the acclaimed political drama series, led by Martin Sheen, were invited to the White House in Washington by the President of the USA, Joe and Jill Biden. The President could not be present in person, but his wife welcomed the stars of the series and addressed Sheen's fictional President Jed Bartlet in particular:
"Although Joe is away meeting the leaders of Australia, India, and Japan right now, he wanted to make sure that President Bartlet and his staff got a chance to see the Oval Office again," she said, adding that the series has inspired many to want to serve the USA.
Martin Sheen then took his place at the podium, where he passionately recited a patriotic poem by poet Rabindranath Tagore. The series' creator Aaron Sorkin concluded the ceremony, describing the series as "idealistic, ambitious, and romantic".
Sorkin's award-winning drama was broadcast in seven seasons between 1999 and 2006. The series won numerous awards for its realistic portrayal of the work in the White House administration.
