"The criticism has been significant and it is clear that a reboot is needed here. The government intends to appoint a new inquiry into the reindeer herding act with new directives as soon as possible," says Minister for Rural Affairs Peter Kullgren (KD) in a press release.
The Renmark Committee has worked on behalf of the government to develop proposals for how small game hunting and fishing should be conducted in reindeer herding areas in the mountains.
The first partial report, presented in August last year, has been met with criticism from both authorities, municipalities, and interest organizations, as well as Sami organizations and representatives. In June this year, several actors demanded that the inquiry should start from scratch, which is now the case.
"The purpose of the new inquiry is to work out long-term sustainable proposals that have broad anchorage both among those affected and in the Riksdag," the government writes in the press release.
