Snow chaos as Östersund stays in Superettan

The snow fell over Jämtkraft arena – so heavily that the qualifying match for Superettan between Östersund and Lund was forced to be interrupted for a while. Then the home team could ensure their place in the second-highest football league, after a total of 5–2 in the double match.

Östersund, with a 2-0 lead from the first meeting, received Lund in the return match on Sunday.

The home team had a nightmare start, as William Thellsson was fouled in Östersund's penalty area and Lund was awarded a penalty in the fourth minute.

Viktor Ekblom took care of the situation from the penalty spot and gave Lund the lead in the match.

Östersund did not seem too shaken by the tough start. With about a quarter of the game played, the home team could equalize, and just ten minutes later came the 2-1 goal – which meant a comfortable 4-1 total in the qualifying round.

Lund managed to crawl a little closer when they scored 2-2 in the second half – but Simon Kroon had the final say, in his last match of his career. In the 90th minute, the 31-year-old, who suffers from MS, scored 3-2 for the home team, which became the final result of the match.

Stopped for snow clearing

The match was also affected by heavy snowfall on Jämtkraft Arena, and the game had to be interrupted for a while in the second half when both the ball and the lines became difficult to see.

The match could be resumed after a while, when the lines had been cleared.

The players were fortunately already used to situations arising during the qualifying round. In the first match between the teams, the second half had to be postponed due to a fire alarm.

The double meeting ended with a total score of 5-2 to Östersund, which means that they will remain a Superettan team next season.

"Giffarna" remain in Superettan

Less than 20 miles away, another qualifying match for Superettan was played on Sunday, when Gif Sundsvall – with a 1-0 lead from the first match – received FC Stockholm in the return match.

Just like in Östersund, the snowfall caused problems, and the match had to be interrupted to clear the pitch.

In the end, it became a dramatic match, where FC Stockholm forced extra time after scoring 2-1 in the final minutes (2-2 total) – but on the replay, it was clear that the goal should have been disallowed for handball when Villiam Dahlström steered the ball in with his arm.

And the question is whether the home team was not also robbed of a penalty in added time, when Lucas Forsberg was given a clear shove in Stockholm's penalty area.

In extra time, Sundsvall could decide the match. Pontus Engblom scored 2-2, and in the match's final minute came the 3-2 goal in an open goal. "Giffarna" thus remain in Superettan with a total score of 4-2.
