In the first half, United were awarded a penalty after the referee received help from VAR. The team captain Bruno Fernandes shot it high over the goal, and the teams went into halftime with 0–0.
After almost an hour of play, United took the lead when Lenny Yoro headed in 1–0 on a corner. The Fulham players were not satisfied that the goal was approved, as Yoro pushed his defender when he jumped up to head.
A quarter of an hour later, the home team equalized through Emile Smith Rowe, when he was the fastest forward on the play from the left side and kicked the ball into the goal with a karate kick.
Last season, United finished behind Fulham in the table – the Manchester team finished in 15th place and Fulham became 11th. Ahead of this season, United have recruited for large sums of money and are expected to finish higher up in the Premier League.
