Häcken retain Swedish title despite selling players for nearly 30 million kronor

Häcken are defending their Swedish Championship title despite selling players for 30 million kronor this year. Club manager Marcus Jodin says this is the way forward for other clubs too. “I believe it is a prerequisite for both the men’s and women’s sides,” he says.

Häcken won the Swedish Championship last year and also won the first edition of the European Cup this spring.

This led to a record sale at the beginning of the summer, when Felicia Schröder joined Real Madrid. Häcken described it as "the most expensive transfer to date in women's football".

A few more players also left during the summer, including Monica Jusu Bah, who joined Manchester United in another major deal.

Against this background, Marcus Jodin is especially satisfied as he stands a little way from the celebrations on the home pitch after securing the Swedish Championship title.

We can state that this is the club's eighth title in eight years. And that we have done it despite losing two of the very best players in the Swedish women's championship, he says.

Crisis in the league?

The sales have been important for Häcken's finances, he says.

Yes, we have sold players for almost 30 million on the women's side. Of course, Felicia Schröder is a big part of that, but we're still bringing in several million from other deals, says Marcus Jodin.

At the same time, many other women's clubs are struggling.

League leaders Uppsala are closing down operations after the season, while other Swedish women's clubs are expected to be hit hard when EFD (Elitfotboll Dam) loses two major sponsors at the turn of the year.

"In the right direction"

However, Marcus Jodin believes this is only a temporary dip in the development of women's football.

The situation is tough for many, and it is clear that we are also affected by a loss of income of two million. But if you look at the different parts of women's football, all the arrows point in the right direction, he says.

Many clubs may face a tough time, but I am convinced that in the long run we will see enormous growth.
