The 34-year-old Englishman stood as the winner in the Tour Championship – and at the same time took home the entire Fedex Cup.
Fleetwood has during his career finished top five 30 times, come second six times, but never been at the top of the podium during his years in the USA. Until now.
I am proud of what I have done before even if I have not won. This does not change anything. Hopefully, it is the first of many, says Fleetwood after the victory.
Before the final round, Fleetwood went out in the lead, and he never let it go. Two under was enough to land on 18 under total – three strokes ahead of the nearest competitors, Russel Henley and Patrick Cantlay.
When the (losses) pile up, you start thinking. When you have lost so many times, a three-stroke lead is not that much.
In June, Fleetwood lost the lead on the last hole in the Travelers Championship after a bogey and saw Keegan Bradley sail past. Also, in the first playoff tournament in this year's Fedex Cup, he led before the final – but fell apart under pressure.
This time he kept the game together. The reward: victory jubilation and approximately 95 million kronor in prize money.
Tommy Fleetwood has previously during his career won seven times on the European tour (now DP World Tour).
For Ludvig Åberg, it was a more modest conclusion. The Swede was never really in the top struggle and finished tied for 21st, a total of seven under par.
