Narges Mohammadi is in prison for, among other things, campaigning against Iranian women being forced to wear hijab and against the country's death penalty. At the beginning of December, she was temporarily released for health reasons and has given an interview with French Elle through text and audio messages.
Mohammadi says that there are 70 prisoners in the notorious Evin Prison's women's section "from all backgrounds, in all ages and of all political convictions".
This is a place where political prisoners die. I have personally documented cases of torture and severe sexual violence against my fellow prisoners.
The human rights activist is going to publish an autobiography, she says in the interview. She is now working on a book about abuse and harassment against women who, like herself, have been imprisoned on political grounds.
Narges Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for having worked for women's rights in deeply conservative Islamic Iran for over 20 years.
