Persson has also asked his followers if they would rather see a kind of "Minecraft 2", which an overwhelming majority chose.
Persson sold Mojang and the "Minecraft" rights to Microsoft in 2014, so it would not be a direct sequel in that case.
"No, it would be super illegal. Instead, I would make a new original game of the same kind as 'Minecraft' and call it something else. They are traditionally called 'spiritual successors' but often feel a bit flat. But if that's what people really want, I would love to make that game", he writes.
However, it seems that a new "Minecraft"-like game will have to wait. Instead, the team is working on a retro-feeling dungeon roguelike, which combines cave exploration with tough battles.
"It seems like we're making Levers and chests", writes Markus Persson on X.
The project is something he has been working on since at least last April, when he presented his new studio Bitshift Entertainment.
