Sabaaneh has worked as a cartoonist since 2002 with images that have both opposed Israel's occupation and examined Palestinian conditions. His latest book "Power born of dreams" was awarded the Palestine Book Award 2022.
"With his satirical drawings, Mohammad Sabaaneh gives people the opportunity to understand and take a stand on their surroundings, without having to read long texts. Through his images in the press, exhibitions, and books, he shares his knowledge of what is happening in a troubled society", the jury writes, among other things, in its motivation.
The EWK Foundation also awards an honorary mention to the Swedish initiative Tecknaruppropet, which today gathers over 200 cartoonists.
The EWK Prize was established in memory of the cartoonist Ewert Karlsson, known under the signature EWK. Since 2000, it has been awarded to artists who work in his spirit. Among previous winners are, among others, Liv Strömqvist and Ulf Lundkvist.
