The Danish painter, sculptor, and author Peter Brandes has passed away, his family announces.
Brandes is known as Denmark's perhaps foremost church artist and he has decorated churches in both Denmark and Norway, including the cathedrals in Roskilde and Århus.
In Denmark, several public artworks created by Brandes stand, and his art – often inspired by Christianity and Greek mythology – can be found in museums in several countries. He has, among other things, sculpted a gigantic vase for the Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem.
He was born on Funen in 1944 and he got his breakthrough in the early 1980s.
In recent years, he has lived and worked in France, Greece, and Denmark, and he was married to the painter Maja Lisa Engelhardt.
Peter Brandes was 80 years old.
