The police in Gothenburg are tracking down suspected unlicensed taxi drivers in the hunt for rapists, reports SVT News West.
The illegal taxi business is something that recurs in reports of rape and sexual assaults, says Emma Ramstedt, deputy local police chief in Gothenburg city, to SVT.
The suspected unlicensed taxi drivers can be tracked down if they have repeatedly been caught driving a taxi without a permit. Their DNA can then be compared with DNA from sexual offense cases.
Overall, sexual offenses are difficult to investigate. Only about 20 percent are solved. Often, there are no witnesses to the incident and it's one person's word against another. That's why this DNA tracking is important, says Emma Ramstedt.
