Beach volleyball stars David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig are already well-known to the Swedish general public. And behind the star duo, the Swedish growth seems to be good.
On Sunday, Jacob Hölting Nilsson and Elmer Andersson won on the second-highest world tour level. In the final, they defeated the Dutch duo Luini/Penninga in two straight sets.
"This is a major international breakthrough for Elmer and Jacob," says national team captain Rasmus Jonsson in a press release.
Hölting Nilsson is 19 years old and Andersson is 18 years old. They are the youngest winners ever on the so-called challenge level. The duo is trained – just like OS gold medalists Åhman/Hellvig – by Jonsson and Anders Kristiansson.
"Jacob and Elmer have taken big steps forward over the past year, and we've seen in training that we've been on the right track. Getting this big success is important for the guys to get confirmation that they can compete at this level – and it gives confidence in the continued investment," says Jonsson.
