The Swedish icebreaker Oden has reached a place where no one has been before - namely Victoria Fjord on northern Greenland.
You have to get through the Lincoln Sea, which is the area in the Arctic with the toughest ice conditions. No ship has reached this far before, says Martin Jakobsson, one of the researchers on board, to Sveriges Radio.
Here, researchers will carry out seven different projects related to climate change. Among other things, they will study whether warm water from the Atlantic can enter the fjord, which could have affected the melting of the C H Ostenfeld glacier.
Already now, they can see that the warm Atlantic currents reach higher up than previously thought.
On the whole, it's hard to see that it's anything other than climate change that's going on, says Martin Jakobsson to SR.
The research group will also look at how melting processes at ice edges appear, observe animal remains, and take rock samples.
The expedition is called Geoeo North of Greenland 2024.
