Luthersson was a lecturer in literature at Lund University and was appointed cultural editor for Svenska Dagbladet in 1993, where he stayed until 2001. According to Torbjörn Elensky, who wrote for the newspaper in the 1990s, Luthersson was never afraid of controversy.

But it was not an end in itself. He was also deeply educated and had developed his own well-grounded views on Swedish literary history, says Elensky to Svenska Dagbladet.

Luthersson has also been CEO and publisher at Bokförlaget Atlantis. In Axess TV, he led 64 conversations under the heading "Luthersson reads world literature".

Peter Luthersson recently completed his assignment as a member of the committee for the investigation into a Swedish cultural canon and stated that it was for private reasons.
