Wassberg made his first set design in 1957 as a high school student at Blackebergs gymnasium in Stockholm. In 1966, he started at the National Theatre where he worked with 120 productions over the next 20 years.
In 1986, he moved to Dramaten and then made the set design for Alf Sjöberg's production of Molière's "The School for Wives". Wassberg stayed at Dramaten until his retirement and became a loyal collaborator to Ingmar Bergman.
Among other things, he made the set designs for his productions of "Ghosts", "Hamlet" and "Mary Stuart". It was also Göran Wassberg who made the set design for Liv Ullmann's film adaptation of "Faithless" and for Bergman's TV productions "In the Presence of a Clown" and "Saraband".
