In 2013, Sweden was the EU country that approved the most asylum applications of all. Now, Sweden is down to 13th place, according to new compiled statistics from Eurostat.
In 2024, the total number of approved asylum applications in the EU increased by 6.9 percent to 437,900 – more than 28,000 more than the previous year. Last year's figure is thus the third highest in the last 15 years, beaten only by 2016 and 2017, during the aftermath of the large refugee wave from Syria in 2015.
Syrians still top the list of those who receive asylum, with 32.3 percent in 2024, followed by Afghans at 16.5 percent and Venezuelans at 7.9 percent.
