A school in Gothenburg has been forced to pay a discrimination compensation after a teacher harassed a student.
The student had celebrated a Muslim holiday and came to school dressed in a religious festive attire. The teacher asked the student to remove the attire, claiming it was provocative and highly inappropriate. After pressure, the student changed into sports clothes.
According to the Discrimination Ombudsman (DO), the student was subjected to harassment related to their religion. The fact that the violation was committed by a teacher is seen as particularly serious.
The school – which investigated the incident only after DO initiated its case – has also failed to fulfill its obligation through investigation or taking measures.
The school has admitted to discrimination.
