The American state of Virginia is asking the Supreme Court to intervene to allow the state to prevent around 1,600 voters from voting, as they are suspected of being non-citizens.

The request comes after a federal appeals court unanimously confirmed a federal judge's order to restore the right to vote to them, which the judge considered to be illegally removed from the electoral roll according to an executive order from the state's Republican governor.

Governor Glenn Youngkin says he ordered the removals from the electoral roll in an attempt to prevent non-citizens from voting.

But on Friday, Patricia Giles, a judge in the US District Court, said Youngkin's actions were illegal under federal law, as it systematically removed voters during a 90-day "quiet period" before the November election.
