Oprah Winfrey surprised – met with cheers

Vice President candidate Tim Walz was in focus on day three of the Democrats' convention. But political heavyweights such as former President Bill Clinton and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi also took the stage in Chicago – and Oprah Winfrey. Choose optimism instead of cynicism, exclaimed the TV star.

Other well-known names that appeared were the former presidential candidates Pete Buttigieg, who is now the transport minister, and senators Amy Klobuchar and Cory Booker.

The Minority Leader of the House of Representatives Hakeem Jeffries received enormous applause when, like his party colleagues, he gave Donald Trump a scolding and declared that Kamala Harris is the future.

But the cheering reached entirely new levels when TV personality Oprah Winfrey suddenly appeared on stage and, in a kind of sermon, praised Harris and her homeland.

Choose truth, choose integrity, choose joy. For that is the best we have in America, said Winfrey to the audience's great applause.

Add to that performances by artists Stevie Wonder and John Legend with Sheila E. The latter interpreted the musician Prince, who was from Minneapolis in Minnesota – the state where Tim Walz is governor.

In parallel, the relay continued with Republicans who told why they are choosing to vote for the Democrats' Kamala Harris this year. The theme of the day was "The fight for our freedoms", which, among other things, alludes to the right to abortion.
