Nine people have been arrested in the southern city of Malaga and on the holiday island of Ibiza, suspected of belonging to one of the largest criminal networks involved in the drug market in Spain and several parts of Europe, the police write in a statement.
Besides ecstasy, the customs authorities also found, among other things, 73 kilos of the drug MDMA, 212 kilos of ketamine, 20 kilos of cocaine, and ten kilos of hash.
According to the police, the gang was run by Italians who had their base on the holiday island of Ibiza, known for its beaches and parties, where party drugs like ecstasy are frequently used.
The police suspect that the gang used vehicles with false bottoms to smuggle the drugs into the country.
Spain is a major gateway for narcotics to Europe, given the country's close ties to its former colonies in Latin America, a major cocaine-producing region, and its proximity to Morocco, a major cannabis producer.
