Already by Sunday, a yellow warning has been issued for strong winds and heavy snowfall in the mountainous regions of Norrbotten and northern Västerbotten.
By Monday, the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has both tightened and extended the warning. Then, an orange warning will apply to the Norrbotten mountains, where locally, storms and snowfall are expected during the night and morning.
A yellow warning for very strong winds has been issued for the Jämtland and Västerbotten mountains. A yellow warning for very strong gusts of wind also applies to the coastal and inland areas of northern Västerbotten and Norrbotten, with a risk of traffic problems, power outages, and damage to forests.
Additionally, a yellow warning for strong winds applies to almost all coastlines.
Monday will be the worst, but by the New Year's weekend, it looks like it will be significantly calmer in terms of winds in the mountains, says meteorologist Kjell Lund at SMHI.
Due to bad weather earlier, during the Christmas week, passenger train traffic between Kiruna and Norwegian Narvik has been cancelled, but is planned to resume on Sunday evening. SJ and the Swedish Transport Administration assess that the bad weather will have subsided before the trains pass through the area.
As it looks now, we have no plans to cancel any traffic again, says Lina Edström at SJ's press office.
And the weather on Tuesday, New Year's Eve?
Then it will be cold in the north, that's for sure. A low-pressure system will quickly pass over Götaland, so it will be rain or snow there. In Svealand, it will be snow. And from January 2, it will be below freezing throughout the country, summarizes Kjell Lund.
