Simon Åström was elected as expected at the association's annual meeting in Solna.
We will work to create a sense of calm within Swedish football. We will work methodically together to continue the development of Swedish football. This is something that will be very important for us, he said during the meeting.
Åström takes over after Fredrik Reinfeldt, who is leaving the chairmanship after two turbulent years. When the nomination committee proposed Åström as the new chairman, the former Prime Minister chose not to stand for re-election.
The former Prime Minister took office in 2023, but his chairmanship was stormy. Among other things, heavy criticism was directed at the working environment at the association, the association's leadership in general, and the then Secretary-General Andrea Möllerberg in particular.
Möllerberg, who was recruited by Reinfeldt, was forced out in January this year.
Simon Åström says he doesn't have any candidates for the job yet.
We must discuss what is important with that role and what profile we are looking for. Then we will do a good job to find the right individual, he says, reports Expressen.
Reinfeldt also received criticism for not being as accessible and visible as his predecessors and for Sweden supporting Saudi Arabia's hosting of the men's football World Championship 2034.
The new chairman Simon Åström is leaving the assignment as chairman of Swedish Elite Football (Sef). Jens T Andersson is taking over as chairman of Sef.
Here are the five latest chairmen of the Swedish Football Association: Simon Åström 2025-, Fredrik Reinfeldt 2023-2025, Karl-Erik Nilsson 2012-2023, Lars-Åke Lagrell 1991-2011, Lennart Johansson 1984-1990.
