NHL team Dallas' Finnish forward Mikko Rantanen risks hefty fines after having failed to perform military service in his home country, reports Ilta-Sanomat. The 28-year-old hockey star did submit an application for deferment, but it is said to have been submitted too late.
The district prosecutor is demanding a sentence of 10–15 days of fines, which in that case would mean a considerable sum. In Finland, the size of each day's fine is calculated based on the income of the person convicted. According to Ilta-Sanomat's calculations, it would in Rantanen's case, if he is convicted, mean somewhere between 56,500 and 84,750 euros. This corresponds to approximately 630,000–950,000 kronor.
