They criticized the setup before, but Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori from Italy could still take a new title in mixed doubles in the US Open tennis.

The doubles specialists won the final over the star pair Casper Ruud, Norway, and Iga Swiatek, Poland, with the numbers 6–3, 5–7, 10–6.

The title is the second in a row for the Italians, but Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori were not sure in advance that they would get to participate in this year's revamped – and criticized – mixed doubles tournament.

The class has a new format with a smaller starting field than before, intended to attract more highly ranked players to the tournament. The reform has been subjected to harsh criticism, not least from the winning pair Errani/Vavassori, who have called it a "pseudo-exhibition with a focus solely on entertainment and artistry".

However, they will probably not complain about the prize money. This year's victory gives them one million dollars, equivalent to almost ten million Swedish kronor. Last year, Errani/Vavassori shared nearly two million kronor.

The mixed doubles tournament started the play in this year's US Open. The singles tournaments start on Sunday morning local time.
