Shortly after half-time, chaos broke out at the arena in Buenos Aires. Stones, chairs, bottles and a distraction grenade (so-called flashbang) were thrown from the away supporters towards the home team's fans.

Independiente supporters broke through the barriers that separated the fans and attacked the away supporters. One of the Universidad de Chile fans was seen jumping from the stand after being pushed by the home team's supporters.

The match was temporarily paused in the 48th minute at the score 1–1 and was later interrupted due to the brawl.

Argentine authorities say that 90 people were arrested in connection with the brawl. A spokesperson for Independiente says that ten people were injured in the clashes. Chile's ambassador to Argentina tells Chilean radio that it is about "stab wounds".

Both clubs condemn the violence. So does the President of Chile.

Chilean national team midfielder Felipe Loyola, who plays for Independiente, also condemns the incident in a post on Instagram:

"A huge shame. I still can't understand what I saw today. This is not football. Sport is not violence", he writes.
