The Chinese have taken home all four OS gold medals since the team competition was included in the program in 2008, and knocked out the host nation France with 3–0 in matches in the semifinal.
Ma Long and Wang Chuqin won the initial doubles against Simon Gauzy and Alexis Lebrun with 3–0 in sets.
Talented youngster Félix Lebrun then put up a good fight against Fan Zhendong – Truls Möregårdh's superior opponent in the singles final – in the first singles match. The Chinese player went up to 2–0 in sets, but the 17-year-old Frenchman then took the third set (11–8). The table tennis hall in Paris was boiling, and in the fourth set, Lebrun saved five match points before Fan could decide in favor of 16–14 and 3–1 in sets.
Big brother Alexis Lebrun then shocked the world's number one Wang Chuqin by winning the first set, but the Chinese player then took three straight sets and China won the Olympic Games final with 3–0 in matches.
