AIK Exits Conference League After Loss to Györi

Penalty miss, own goal and disallowed goal. Lady Fortune was not on AIK's side in the away rematch against Györi in the third qualifying round of the Conference League. It is painful. There is no doubt about it, says AIK's coach Mikkjal Thomassen in Expressen's broadcast after the elimination.

AIK got a tough start to the match when Györi hit the post already in the fourth minute of the game. It set the tone for the first half which was dominated by the Hungarians.

Shortly after half an hour, it also paid off. A nice pass hit the foot of the Serb Zeljko Gavrić, who could easily push in 1–0.

In stoppage time of the first half, AIK seemed to have taken the lead again in the overall standings when Filip Benković reached the highest on a corner and headed the ball into the goal. But the Belgian referee Lawrence Visser wanted otherwise and disallowed the goal after a foul by AIK's Benjamin Tiedemann Hansen.

The second half did not differ much from the first. Györi had a clear advantage over the, for the day, completely black-clad away team.

AIK got an excellent opportunity to equalize the match and regain the overall lead when they were awarded a penalty after a corner. But team captain Anton Salétros failed to outsmart the Hungarians' goalkeeper.

After a little over an hour of play, it was then Salétros' midfield colleague Aron Csongvai's turn to be in the center when he steered in a Györi corner into his own goal.

We were not sharp enough. We are too imprecise and so are the tight margins that do not go our way, says Thomassen and continues:

It is painful. There is no doubt about it.

After that, there were no more goals and the match ended 2–0 (total 3–2) to the Hungarians.
