"Send frozen Russian assets to Ukraine"

With Donald Trump in the White House and economic and political uncertainty in Europe, there is a risk that the support for Ukraine will decrease. One way to help Ukraine is to send frozen Russian assets to the country, writes Eastern Europe expert Torbjörn Becker on DN Debatt.

There is a concern that when Donald Trump is sworn in as the President of the USA on Monday, the American military support to Ukraine will decrease.

And it could lead to Ukraine having to use the promised financial support from the EU to buy weapons on the world market.

"Today, there is also an uncertain political situation in many EU countries, and to that, several have problems with both state finances and growth," writes Torbjörn Becker, head of the Eastern European Institute at the Stockholm School of Economics.

To avoid burdening the EU countries' state finances, he suggests that the Russian assets frozen in the West be sent to Ukraine. It's about approximately 300 billion dollars.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyj has already requested that it be done, "with the knowledge that Trump is a person who likes to get paid for his 'help' (read, get paid for American weapons, which contribute to growth)," writes Torbjörn Becker.
