The UN Security Council expresses "strong concern" after Israel fired at and injured UN peacekeeping forces in southern Lebanon in connection with Israel's intensified military efforts in the region.
This is the first time the UN's most powerful organ has spoken out about last week's Israeli attack on the UN force, called Unifil. The events have been widely condemned.
Israel has stated that the attacks occurred by mistake and indicated that they will be investigated. However, the country's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called on Unifil, which has around 10,500 soldiers on site, to leave their posts. This was rejected by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Monday.
In the statement from Monday evening's Security Council meeting, which does not mention Israel or Lebanon by name, all parties are urged to "respect the safety and security of Unifil personnel and UN facilities".
