A national conservative, Trump-supported historian – but also a man with connections to scandals regarding gang criminals and sex trade. Now Poland's new president Karol Nawrocki has sworn the oath of office.

Let us unite and open a new chapter in our beloved Poland's history, he said in a film clip on social media before the inauguration.

Nawrocki, who like his predecessor Andrzej Duda belongs to the right-wing party Law and Justice (PIS), has promised to be an active president who presents many "stimulating" proposals. He describes the current EU-friendly and left-oriented Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government as "the worst in history".

I have no doubt that Mr. Nawrocki will do everything to irritate us, Tusk has replied according to AFP.

More gratitude?

It is clear that the two will continue to be on a collision course. It is the Prime Minister who primarily governs Poland, but the President has some influence over foreign policy and also the opportunity to stop and block legislation.

Probably, Nawrocki will use this to get through his Ukraine-critical policy. During the election campaign, he opposed the idea of a Ukrainian NATO membership and criticized Kyiv for not showing enough gratitude towards Poland. However, he is not against military support to the neighboring country.

In his inaugural speech, the new President promised, among other things, tough measures against illegal immigration and to stand up for the Polish zloty and not introduce the euro as currency, writes The Guardian.

Has boxed

The Gdansk-born 42-year-old former amateur boxer Nawrocki won the presidential election in June with the smallest possible margin over liberal Rafal Trzaskowski. His slogan was "Poland first, Poles first".

During the election campaign, revelations were published about his connections to the underworld and that he, during his time as a security guard at a hotel in Sopot, had a driving role in the sex trade there. Nawrocki dismissed the allegations as lies and promised to sue the media that published them.

In May, he visited Donald Trump at the White House. After the meeting, he claimed that the US President had told him that he would win. Karol Nawrocki will now become the country's president for five years.
