Parts of the base have been shut down. A message on the facility's website urges all personnel in the closed-off area to "stay inside and close and lock all windows and doors". Local schools have also been closed, according to NBC News.
The soldiers involved in the shooting have received care on site or been taken to hospital, the military base reports on social media. There is still no information that anyone has been killed.
The alarm about the shooting came at eleven in the morning local time. Just over half an hour later, the suspected perpetrator could be arrested.
At Fort Stewart, military units are trained and the third infantry division is stationed there, reports CNN.
Over 10,000 people - soldiers, family members and civilian employees - live on the facility, about six miles southwest of the city of Savannah.
Georgia's governor Brian Kemp writes on social media that he has informed himself about "today's tragedy" and that he expresses his sympathy for the victims of the shooting and their families.
