The personnel at Tull didn't know what was waiting for them when they checked a suitcase at Landvetter in February. The suitcase turned out to contain 31 turtles, 27 salamanders, three snakes, and a lizard, writes Aftonbladet.
The endangered salamanders had suffocated to death in the cramped space. Of the turtles, which are a strongly endangered species, all but one have survived and will likely find new homes in the zoo, along with the three snakes. The lizard, also endangered, has been put down at the authorities' decision.
The man with the suitcase claimed to have gotten the animals at a bar in Thailand and would be paid to pass them on. After two interrogations, he was released on bail and has been missing since.
