A new sanctions system is being introduced in the EU to enable sanctions against Russian hybrid attacks. Those responsible will in the future be able to be subject to entry bans in the EU and a freezing of any assets in the EU.
"Russia will not succeed in undermining our resilience and stability", writes Foreign Minister Josep Borrell on X.
The formal decision was made during a finance ministers' meeting in Luxembourg on Tuesday and is expected to be followed shortly by a first list of individuals and organizations proposed to be punished.
In parallel, the EU countries also approved extensions of previous sanctions due to the deteriorating situation for democracy and human rights in Nicaragua, around the civil war in Sudan, and against the terrorist organizations IS and al-Qaida.
