The EU Parliament condemns Russian attempts to influence upcoming elections in Moldova and demands more sanctions against individuals who "undermine" the country's independence.
A resolution was passed with 508 yes-votes against 53 no-votes and 104 abstentions in Strasbourg on Wednesday, where Russia is accused, among other things, of having spent over one billion Swedish kronor to get Moldovans to vote against further rapprochement with the EU when the country holds presidential elections and a referendum on October 20.
In parallel, another resolution was passed expressing concern for democracy in Georgia ahead of the country's parliamentary elections on October 26. The majority in the EU Parliament – a total of 495 votes in favor against 73 opposed and 86 abstentions – wants, among other things, to freeze all EU contributions until newly adopted laws against non-governmental organizations and LGBTQ rights are repealed.
