The lawyer for the American former marine Paul Whelan, who has been imprisoned in Russia since 2018, says she is trying to find out where in the country Whelan is located.

I have sent a request to the (prison) colony administration, but I have not received any response, she says to the regime-friendly Russian news agency Interfax.

According to Russian media, Moscow is preparing a large-scale prisoner exchange. The rumors have gained momentum after at least seven other prisoners in Russia have reportedly been moved from their prisons in recent days.

Whelan worked on security assignments for an American spare parts company when he was arrested. He has been sentenced to 16 years in prison.

The American journalist Evan Gershkovich is also imprisoned in Russia and could be included in an exchange. He was recently sentenced to 16 years in prison.
