One should know that Fredrik is aware that there are both district and elite clubs that want continuity and want him to continue, but he is also aware that there are district and elite clubs that may want something new, says Håkan Wifvesson, the election committee's chairman, to TT.

Hammarby has an annual meeting decision that the association "at every given opportunity shall work for its own or another suitable candidate" other than Fredrik Reinfeldt, and the former prime minister received early criticism during his presidency for expressing positive views on the video referee system VAR in Swedish football.

In the autumn, there has also been turmoil in the association after the newspaper Offside reported that current and former employees are directing harsh criticism at the work environment and the association's leadership.

Beat Ohlsson

Despite the criticism, Fredrik Reinfeldt is running for re-election as chairman of the football association.

"The association meeting that elected me in 2023 gave me a clear mandate for change, which I have implemented and intend to continue with if I receive renewed confidence", Reinfeldt writes on the association's website.

Already when he was elected, the football movement was divided with eight original candidates. The election committee then selected its three main candidates to finally recommend Fredrik Reinfeldt.

When we listened to the movement at the time, Fredrik had the support of over 60 percent, which was also the outcome of the association meeting, says Wifvesson.

At the annual meeting in 2023, Reinfeldt won the election against Lars-Christer Ohlsson, former UEFA CEO and former chairman of Swedish Elite Football (SEF).

No Opponent

So far, there is no opponent for the annual meeting on March 22 next year. The former AIK chairman Robert Falck stated in September that he could consider running, but no one has yet nominated him.

There is certainly someone who will nominate someone before the deadline on January 15, says Wifvesson.

It may happen that the election committee proposes another candidate than Reinfeldt for the chairman's post.

If there is a candidate who we believe can make Swedish football better and after listening to the organization, what the members think, it is clear that it can be the proposal that is submitted by the election committee, says Håkan Wifvesson.

Fredrik Reinfeldt has announced that he is available to be re-elected as chairman of the Swedish Football Association at the association meeting on March 22 next year.

Latest by January 15, opponents can be nominated by district associations or by a club in the two highest series on the women's and men's sides. There are 24 district associations and the number of eligible elite clubs totals 60.

A potential opponent will be interviewed by the election committee and it will be examined whether the candidate is eligible as chairman.

Latest by February 15, the election committee shall submit its proposal on who they propose as chairman.
