The billion investment in Millennium is intended to provide the 49 municipalities in the Västra Götaland region with a common journal system in healthcare. However, the implementation is currently on hold after being stopped just three days into operation last week.
On Tuesday, the regional board in Västra Götaland decided to appoint an external review of the problems.
This is a review that will show what happened and put us in this serious situation, says Helén Eliasson.
The new so-called healthcare information system was originally planned to be implemented in stages until the autumn of 2026. The cost, including the contract with the supplier Oracle: 5.5 billion kronor.
The launch last week was preceded by criticism of the system from healthcare employees and warnings that Millennium was not ready.
"I really regret it"
In hindsight, no one listened enough to the concerns, admits Helén Eliasson.
No, in retrospect, that's an assessment you can make when you look at this. But the collective information we had on the table was that they were ready to start implementing this, she says.
Instead, alarm reports came in from employees, among others, at Södra Älvsborgs hospital in Borås, already during the first hours.
And on Friday, after just over three days, the implementation was at least temporarily put on hold.
I really regret what happened, says Helén Eliasson.
Many people have put a lot of effort and energy into this. But we realized pretty quickly that this wasn't going well.
Different alternatives
Politicians want the first results of the external review by December 10. Additionally, the regional director Håkan Sandahl will draw up an action plan with different alternatives for the future.
According to Helén Eliasson, it is important, not least considering that Region Skåne is also facing an implementation of Millennium.
She does not want to speculate about what the future of the journal system will look like.
You can often draw very quick conclusions. But this is something we've been working on for several years in the Västra Götaland region, she says.
Now it absolutely didn't go as intended, and then we need to ensure first what happened.
