During the Friday morning, it is already thundering in some places in western and central Sweden.

It has been and is thundering in an area that has gone from the West Coast over Småland and further up over Östergötland. It will pass Stockholm during the day, says Kjell Lund, meteorologist at SMHI.

”Severe rainstorm”

The bad weather will pass by relatively quickly. In the evening, another bad weather is expected to move in towards Gävle from Östersund. Here, SMHI has issued a warning for severe thunderstorms.

The warning applies to Southern Norrland and northwestern Svealand during the afternoon, as well as Eastern Svealand and southern Gävleborg County in the evening.

 – It will pass Stockholm in the evening. It is a really severe rainstorm and it can blow down trees and so on, says Kjell Lund.

Locally, it can come up to 30 millimeters of precipitation, he says.

It's so that it can flow into basements and affect stormwater systems. It's very much chance that determines where the heaviest precipitation will strike. It can come a lot in a short time in an area, and then a few kilometers away it may be that nothing comes.

Avoid open fields

In Stockholm, the Culture Festival is taking place, but Lund does not advise against visiting it.

 – There is a very small risk of being hit by lightning if you are among houses in Stockholm. On the other hand, you can get very wet because it's coming so much rain.

According to SMHI's general recommendations, one should, among other things, think about not being in open areas because lightning seeks the shortest path from the cloud to the ground.

It's good to be indoors and avoid open fields. What you should do is to keep as low as possible and not bathe either, says Kjell Lund.

Facts: Protection against lightning

TT

When the thunder is on - skip bathing, fishing, and boat trips. Avoid going up on mountains or high places. Avoid open places like fields because lightning seeks the shortest path from the cloud to the ground.

The one who is in open terrain and does not have time to seek suitable shelter can go down on their knees and bend forward with their hands on their knees.

Do not seek shelter under trees because they are more easily hit by lightning. Towers and poles pose the same risk.

Pull out plugs from electronics. Do not use the computer with the power cord in or a fixed phone.

Stay indoors. Concrete houses provide the best protection.
