In total, 1.2 million cubic metres of snow were removed during the winter's snow clearance in Luleå. Not all of it will have melted by the time summer is over, according to NSD.

This involves record amounts that could fill the Avicii Arena (Globen) twice over, and is 25 per cent higher than last year's snow masses. As usual, the snow has been transported to the snow tip on Porsön in Luleå, where it will remain until winter.

It has not been since 1986 that the snow has completely melted away during a summer. This is despite the council stirring it up at regular intervals to get the snow to thaw.

It will remain a few metres at the bottom regardless of our efforts. We might get it down to two, three metres, says Patrik Ruumensaari, street manager at Luleå council, to NSD.

The fact that the town has become denser has also created greater pressure on the council from property owners who want to get rid of the snow.
