A power outage has affected almost the entire Puerto Rico early on New Year's Eve morning. 1.3 million households lack electricity in the self-governing American territory, which is noticeably quiet since electrical appliances and air conditioners stopped.
It may take up to two days to restore power, according to the authorities.
According to the private electricity company Luma Energy, around 90 percent of its subscribers lack power. The fault is believed to have occurred in an underground cable. An investigation into the cause is underway while repair work is being carried out.
The islanders are used to recurring, shorter power outages attributed to a deteriorating power grid after Hurricane Maria's passage in 2017.
