Cheaper beer from microbreweries could become a reality next summer – if the tax is lowered. The Ministry of Finance is circulating a proposal to reduce the tax on microbrewed beer.
According to the EU's alcohol tax directive, there is currently an opportunity to lower the alcohol tax for microbreweries, but Sweden has not yet taken advantage of it.
Now, Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson writes in a press release that microbreweries contribute to job opportunities and that they would have further opportunities to grow with lower taxes.
To be eligible for the reduced tax, there are certain criteria, such as a brewery being independent from other beer producers and not producing more than three million litres of beer per year.
Similar measures to promote this sector also exist in Denmark and some other EU countries.
