Italian police have cracked down on a network that has been counterfeiting several art giants – including Banksy, Andy Warhol, Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, Salvador Dalí, and Picasso, writes BBC.
Over 2,100 counterfeit works have been found, which are estimated to have been worth up to 2.3 billion Swedish kronor. Six different workshops were discovered where the counterfeiting took place, two in Tuscany and one in Venice. 38 people have been arrested who may now be charged with, among other things, counterfeiting and illegal art trade.
The police received a tip about the network after they seized around 200 paintings from a businessman in Pisa in 2023, including a work by Amedeo Modigliani.
