The charge concerns events in Malmö, partly in April 2022 and partly in September of the same year, writes the Prosecution Authority in a press release.
"My assessment is that there are sufficient grounds to bring charges and now the district court will try the case", says senior prosecutor Adrien Combier-Hogg in the press release.
During the Easter weekend in 2022, riots broke out in several Swedish cities, after Paludan planned to burn Korans at locations around the country. On April 16, he had been granted permission to hold a public gathering in Landskrona, but the police later changed the decision so that it was instead held on the outskirts of Malmö.
At the gathering, Rasmus Paludan made a number of statements about Muslims, which according to the prosecutor's assessment were agitation against an ethnic group.
On September 6 of the same year, Paludan made statements about "Arabs and Africans" at another meeting in Malmö, which were also agitation against an ethnic group, according to the prosecutor.
At the same occasion, Paludan directly targeted a person with a number of insults. According to the prosecutor, the motive behind the verbal attacks was to offend the person with reference to skin color, national or ethnic origin. In this part, he is being charged with defamation.
When TT reaches Rasmus Paludan shortly after the notification, he says that he himself has not been informed about the charge.
I haven't heard anything. What I can say is that I have been questioned in Denmark and then I denied any wrongdoing, he says.
